Awards to Society Members

Guenter Fettweis Award

The award recognizes active SOMP members for their contributions in the field of relevant mining educational disciplines, including ongoing development and enhancement of educational programs, international collaboration, and discipline-focused recognition.

The award is named after Professor Guenter B. Fettweis, who in 1990 assembled a group of Mining Engineering Professors at his University, Montanuniversitat in Leoben, Austria, and reconstituted the historic Society of Mining Professors. Professor Fettweis became the first President of the newly formed society and an inspired leader of SOMP. Professor Fettweis serves as an example to his colleagues for his enthusiasm and commitment to the goals of the Society.

Ludwig Wilke Award

The Award recognizes active SOMP members for their contributions through research outcomes and developments for the mining industry and society at large, and professional service, contributions, and engagement with the international mining industry.

The award is named after Professor F. Ludwig Wilke, one of the founders of the Society of Mining Professors. A distinguished engineer, researcher and academic, Prof. Wilke has promoted research programs and partnerships, encouraged scientific publications and has provided leadership and mentoring to his SOMP colleagues.

Tim Shaw Award

The award recognizes rising SOMP Members who have devoted significant effort to develop teaching and learning innovations, promoted educational excellence and motivated and inspired students to learn.

Michael Karmis SOMP PhD Fellowship Award

The award recognizes SOMP junior members who desire to pursue an academic career by acquiring a PhD in the field of Mining Engineering and/or Mineral Processing.

Bruce Hebblewhite SOMP Best Paper Award

The award recognizes author(s) presenting papers at the SOMP Annual General Meeting (AGM), for their contributions to the body of knowledge.
