Awards to Society Members
Günter Fettweis Award
The Günter Fettweis Award recognizes active SOMP members who have made outstanding contributions to mining education, including the development and enhancement of educational programs, international collaboration, and discipline-focused initiatives. Significant and sustained service to SOMP, including active engagement in and contributions to the advancement of the Society and its objectives, is a key criterion for this award.
The award is named after Professor Günter B. Fettweis, who, in 1990, assembled a group of mining engineering professors at his university, Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria, and re-established the Society of Mining Professors. Professor Fettweis became the first president of the newly formed Society and an inspiring leader of SOMP. His enthusiasm, leadership, and commitment to the goals of the Society continue to serve as an example to SOMP members.

Ludwig Wilke Award
The Ludwig Wilke Award recognizes active SOMP members who have made outstanding contributions through research outcomes, research leadership, and developments that benefit the mining industry and society. The award also recognizes the translation of research into industry practice, professional engagement, and collaboration within the international mining community. Significant and sustained service to SOMP, including active engagement in and contributions to the advancement of the Society and its objectives, is a key criterion for this award.
The award is named after Professor F. Ludwig Wilke, one of the founders of the Society of Mining Professors. A distinguished engineer, researcher and academic, Professor Wilke promoted research programs and partnerships, encouraged scientific publications, and provided leadership and mentoring to his SOMP colleagues.

Tim Shaw Award
The award recognizes rising SOMP Members who have devoted significant effort to develop teaching and learning innovations, promoted educational excellence and motivated and inspired students to learn.

Michael Karmis SOMP PhD Fellowship Award
The award recognizes SOMP junior members who desire to pursue an academic career by acquiring a PhD in the field of Mining Engineering and/or Mineral Processing.

Bruce Hebblewhite SOMP Best Paper Award
The award recognizes author(s) presenting papers at the SOMP Annual General Meeting (AGM), for their contributions to the body of knowledge.
